Every website has a story

Domains reveal ownership, hosting, registration, and connection patterns that websites themselves do not volunteer.

What domains reveal

  • **Registration information**: Name, organization, contact details (often redacted but sometimes not).
  • **Name servers**: DNS configuration reveals infrastructure relationships.
  • **Registrar**: The company that registered the domain. Some registrars are more privacy-focused than others.
  • **Registration dates**: When the domain was created. New domains are sometimes suspicious.
  • **Expiration**: Domains about to expire may indicate abandoned infrastructure.

Tools for domain research

  • **WHOIS databases**: Basic registration lookup.
  • **DNS lookup tools**: Traffic routes and name server relationships.
  • **Screenshot tools**: Visual confirmation of what the domain shows.
  • **Historical records**: What the domain used to point to.

First steps

  1. Run a basic WHOIS lookup.
  2. Check DNS records for current configuration.
  3. Take screenshots of current content.
  4. Check historical records if available.
